Huey P. Newton
Huey Newton was born on February 17th, 1942, in Monroe, Louisiana but only a few years later his family moved to Oakland, California for better job opportunities. Newton found school difficult as he felt that he was made to be ashamed of his color. He frequently got into trouble with school authorities and was suspended on a number of occasions. While at Oakland City College, Newton became interested in politics. He read the writings of Mao Zedong and Malcolm X. There wasn't a political party in Oakland that properly represented the black community there, Newton, along with Bobby Seale, started the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in October 1966, which would represent the black community.
